The Amphi Coffee Table, a captivating fusion of Danish design and Italian manufacturing excellence. This distinguished coffee table embodies a profound dialogue between history and contemporary aesthetics, drawing inspiration from ancient architecture, monumental theater structures, and the timeless principles of proportion and scale.

Design Philosophy: A Study in Material, Balance, and Relation

At its core, the Amphi Coffee Table is a precise study of geometry, scale, and relational balance. The design draws upon classical mathematical systems such as the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Ratio, principles that have shaped architecture for millennia.

Nothing is left to chance. The interaction between forms, dimensions, and placement is meticulously calibrated, creating a symbiotic relationship between each element. The result is a composition where symmetry and asymmetry coexist in quiet tension.

Crafted from solid blocks of Travertine stone, extra clear tempered glass, and solid brass, complemented by a miniature cast bronze figure, the table embodies material honesty – a cornerstone of Overgaard & Dyrman’s design philosophy. In an era increasingly defined by digital processes and artificial intelligence, the Amphi Coffee Table reasserts the value of tactile materials, human creativity, and transparency in design. The table invites reflection in both the literal and figurative senses.

A Fascination with the Past – Reinterpreted for the Present and Future

The Amphi Coffee Table reflects Overgaard & Dyrman’s enduring fascination with nature and the architectural achievements of antiquity. Referencing the scale, geometry, and spatial logic of Greek and Roman theaters, the piece transcends traditional furniture design to become a functional sculpture – a modern monument.

“Looking back – moving forward,” explain Jasper Overgaard. The table represents a careful balance between art and design, where authenticity, exploration, and proportion guide every decision. “The form was already there–hidden within the stone–we just had to reveal it,” Christian Dyrman continues.

Each table has its own distinct expression – shaped by the structure of the unique stone from which it is created – an expressive materiality that evokes the wonder and grandeur of nature.

A Tribute to Architectural and Cultural Heritage

The inspiration for the Amphi Coffee Table also derives from the origins of theater architecture. The term amphitheater itself, rooted in the ancient Greek word ἀμφι-θέατρον, meaning ‘on both sides’ or ‘all around,’ and “place for viewing”, signifies venues built to evoke a sense of monumental presence and spatial relationship. Dating back to 80 BCE with the amphitheater of Pompeii, and even earlier Greek theaters from the 6th century BCE, these structures symbolize the celebration of space, proportion, and relation – concepts vividly captured in this table.

The Amphi Coffee Table pays homage to this architectural history. Its form invites viewers to contemplate the beauty of proportion and the cultural stories embedded in monumental architecture.

Personal Memory, Monumental Impact

The design also draws on personal experience. Jasper Overgaard recalls attending a concert by Sir Elton John at the Great Theatre of Ephesus, a venue over 2,000 years old. Surrounded by ancient stone monuments and a fascinating history, the moment revealed how architecture, culture, and emotion can merge into lasting memory. “Some monumental memories stand forever,” Jasper reflects – a sentiment embedded in the spirit of the Amphi Coffee Table.

Celebrating the Creative Process – A Reflection of Sculptural Art, Functionality, and Visual Balance

Balancing sculpture and function, history and modernity, the Amphi Coffee Table stands as an exploration of enduring design principles. It celebrates our architectural heritage, material integrity, and the beauty of proportion – values that transcend time.

“We cultivate the idea of thinking in layers–where what may initially appear simple and legible is allowed to unfold into multiple dimensions, rewarding those who look closer and engage more deeply with the design,” says Jasper Overgaard.

This philosophy is embodied in the Amphi Coffee Table through a considered exploration of the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence, its internal proportions, and the shifting perception of the table depending on viewpoint and light.

The final Amphi Coffee Table is the outcome of an intensive and playful design process involving form studies, graphic drawings, scale prototypes, and full-scale 1:1 models – resulting in a finely balanced dialogue between shape and material.

Each table is made to order, uniquely numbered and delivered with a Certificate of Authenticity.
